The Water Way: Recover the Original Salime Route

Avoid the dangerous asphalt detour and navigate over the submerged Camino.

Did you know that the current official route along the dam road is a modern “invention”?

Before the massive reservoir was built in the 1950s, pilgrims didn’t take that huge detour. They descended straight to the bottom of the Navia River valley and crossed on foot over the historic Puente del Carpio (an architectural gem older than the Salcedo bridge), passing through lively villages like Salime, Susalime, and Salcedo.

Today, those villages and bridges sleep under millions of liters of water. With the Villarpedre alternative, we recover the original path of King Alfonso II’s Camino. We replace the asphalt with forest trails and cross the reservoir by boat, literally sailing over history.

Furthermore, you gain safety: by taking this route, you completely avoid walking along the main dam road—a monotonous stretch with traffic and barely any shoulder, making it dangerous and stressful for pilgrims.

Timing and Expert Advice

To enjoy a stress-free experience, keep this stage logistics in mind:

  • Calculate your time: From Berducedo or A Mesa to the Villarpedre pier, you have approximately 20 kilometers.

  • The terrain: Although most of this stretch is downhill towards the valley, don’t let your guard down. Adjust your pace to arrive with plenty of time for your boat reservation.

  • The well-deserved rest: We recommend leaving with plenty of time so you can take a good dip or simply lie down and rest at the Villarpedre pier, or right after crossing to the other shore, before starting the final climb.

What does your Logistics Pack include?

This is a logistical support service so you only have to worry about walking. By booking this management, you get:

  • Access to the Exclusive GPS Track: Real-time navigation with our “Blue Dot” system. The Villarpedre trail uses forest tracks; with our map, you’ll know exactly where to turn to reach the pier without hesitation, and you’ll have access to rest areas and water fountains.

  • Boat Booking Management: Forget about searching for phone numbers or coordinating schedules. We speak directly with the local boatman to arrange your crossing and ensure the logistics are ready when you reach the shore.

  • Emergency & Support Contacts: A list of local taxis and support points in case you need luggage transport or assistance on this section.
