You Choose Your Own Way: The Original Route vs. The Classic
Unlike other guides, at The Primitive Way we don’t impose a single path: we recover history. We have mapped the journey by dividing key stages into “A” and “B” options. What many call “alternatives” (our “A” routes) are actually the original trails. In the 9th century, King Alfonso II did not go down into the valley of Pola de Allande (the current 5B route); he crossed the high ridges on the legendary Ruta de los Hospitales (5A). The same happens in Galicia: you decide whether to take the original high route via the Hospitales of A Fonsagrada (8A) or the modern standard path (8B). You have the control to choose between pure history or the comforts of the classic route.
The Water Way: The historic crossing of Salime The modern Camino Primitivo suffers from a long, tough road detour to bypass the Salime dam. But before the reservoir flooded the valley in the mid-20th century, pilgrims crossed directly through it. Our stage 6A (“The Water Way”) is a comprehensive logistics package that allows you to recover that original crossing by taking a boat across the reservoir via Villarpedre. We manage the booking directly with the local boatman for you and provide the exact GPS track to reach the hidden pier. You save kilometers of asphalt and experience the Camino as it used to be (although if you prefer stage 6B walking across the modern dam, it is 100% mapped!). Your phone is the best guide (The Blue Dot) Our mapping tool is built to survive in the mountains. We don’t just give you a line on a map: you get the detailed elevation profile, accumulated elevation gain, and interactive waypoints with restaurants and accommodations. Simply open the map in your web browser, grant location permissions, and a blue dot will mark your exact position in real-time on the “A” or “B” track you have chosen. It is literally impossible to get lost.
